I have always been a big fan of small boutiques. They always had the latest fashion trends and probably the tackiest but most unique clothes you can find (which I live for). Being that I went to High School in the city on fashion avenue (hey Fashion Industries, represent), I was able to explore the many fashion boutiques the city had to offer. This gave me insight on what is popular, what is trending, and what will always be in style. Walking in and out of these boutiques helped me build my style. I discovered new textures, fabrics, and designs. The best part of it all were the prices, everything was fairly priced, and you knew exactly where your money was going (to the business owner duh). So not only were you fashionable, but you were also helping out a fellow business owner. You knew what you were getting and you were aware of the quality at hand. Can’t get any better than that.
Unfortunately, and fortunately, due to our current fast growing digital world, fashion became a convenience. You do not need to go out and shop in person anymore. Everything is a click away. Due to that, retailers and boutiques began to close. As a consumer and a personal shopper/stylist I felt the shift. To be honest, I lost my job because my company closed their doors. They decided to completely transition to an online retail store. They weren’t the only ones. All the boutiques I used to go to, are now gone. The sad reality of it all, is that some small businesses cannot transition into online retailers. It is a lot harder than you think. Not only do you now have to compete with giant online retailers, but you also have to somehow stick out from the oversaturated online fashion market. What used to go towards your rent, now may need to go into branding and marketing, and that adds up.
I still am a very big fan of small boutiques/small businesses. Even though I prefer to shop in person, I am glad that there are small businesses popping up online. It makes me happy that I am able to support new and upcoming fashion brands.
